How to Travel Munich with Kids – Nymphenburg Palace and Hirschgarten
We show you how to travel to Munich with kids and explore the best spots for families! In this episode, we visit Nymphenburg Palace and Hirschgarten, two family-friendly spots.
Kids Give Their Honest Opinions on Nymphenburg Palace and the Hirschgarten
You’ve probably seen videos of tours of Munich before, but we’ve got a different twist for you! See this charming city through the eyes of our four kids. We took our kids by train to Munich for Halloween weekend (which isn’t celebrated much amongst Germans, more on that here). In this episode, we visited Schloß Nymphenburg and Hirschgarten. In the next episode, we see Marienplatz, the English Garden, and attend a Halloween party at the Hard Rock Cafe.
We had a lot of fun, but the kids definitely had their own opinions about what we saw, LOL! Watch this video to see what KIDS think about fancy buildings, palaces, and what it is they’d rather be doing!
What’s Special about Nymphenburg Palace?
Nymphenburg Palace is a stunning Baroque palace located in Munich, Germany. It was commissioned by the Bavarian Elector Ferdinand Maria and his wife, Henriette Adelaide of Savoy, in the late 17th century. The palace is renowned for its architectural beauty, lavish interiors, and extensive gardens. It served as a summer residence for the Bavarian monarchs and their families for over 200 years.
One of the special features of Nymphenburg Palace is its impressive Baroque architecture. It is considered one of the finest examples of the Baroque style in Europe. It is so colorful and is really a treat for the eyes! You can tour the palace, and they offer audio guides, including one just for kids!
Inside the palace, you’ll see intricate ornamentation, frescoes, and sculptures, all of which reflect the opulence and grandeur of the Bavarian monarchy. It contains several impressive rooms, such as the Great Hall, which is decorated with magnificent ceiling frescoes. Another is the Porcelain Cabinet, which houses an extensive collection of porcelain. We really enjoyed exploring the palace gardens, where the kids could run and play while we adults enjoyed the statues. The gardens feature fountains, sculptures, and a charming canal. They are a major attraction and make for a picturesque backdrop to the palace.
The Marstallmuseum at Nymphenburg Palace
There is a second museum in the palace that is located in the palace’s former royal stables. Our kids didn’t have the energy to see this museum, and honestly, they probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it. Kevin and I saw it many years ago when we first visited Munich as a newly married couple. We really enjoyed seeing the carriages of the royals!
The museum houses an impressive collection of state coaches, sleighs, and other equestrian-related items that belonged to the Bavarian royal family. You can learn the history of the coaches, which were used for everything from royal weddings and coronations to hunting expeditions and diplomatic missions.
The Marstallmuseum also features a collection of royal costumes, including outfits worn by King Ludwig II and his ancestors, as well as a display of historical carriages and horse-drawn vehicles. The museum offers visitors a unique glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the Bavarian monarchy and their equestrian pursuits. In addition to the Marstallmuseum, visitors can also explore other parts of Nymphenburg Palace, such as the main palace, which is home to several other museums and exhibits.
Have a Beer and Let the Kids Run and Play in the Hirschgarten
The Hirschgarten is a large park and beer garden. It is famous for being one of the largest beer gardens in the world, with seating for over 8,000 people. The park is also home to a deer park, where visitors can see and interact with deer and other wildlife. This was particularly fun for the kids! Overall, it’s a relaxing spot for families where parents don’t feel they have to keep the kids still and quiet.
The Hirschgarten is a fun destination for kids and families because of its large playground area, which features swings, slides, and climbing structures. Additionally, the park has a miniature railway that runs through the park and is a popular attraction for children. Families can also bring a picnic and enjoy the park’s beautiful green spaces or try traditional Bavarian cuisine at the beer garden. We found the restaurant food, which we ate outside in the beer garden, to be really delicious!
